S.S. “Soldek”

"Soldek" is the first ocean-going vessel put into operation in the history of the Polish shipyard industry. She was designed by a team of Polish engineers under the leadership of Henryk Gieldzik and built in Gdansk Shipyard, established on 19 October 1947.

Visitors s.s. "Soldek" can see the historic construction of the quarter-decker coal-ore carrier with four holds and superstructures on mid-ship and poop deck. On the sides of the ship are the weld and rivet hull fitting method, not used anymore. On the decks there are four holds hatches, anchors and cargo handling gear with steam propelled engines. The most interesting deck is the boat deck on the aft with all life-saving equipment and emergency steering gear. In mid-ship and aft superstructure the visitor can see the officers’ and ratings’ working conditions in the middle of the 20th century. On the bridge, where initially there was no radar, there is historic equipment, for example voice tube to communicate with the engine room. The fully-equipped engine room lets the visitor see the method of propulsion with coal-powered boilers and piston steam engine, not in use anymore.
