The Forest Theatre – Lesny Theatre
The Forest Theatre is a summer stage situated in a forest of Wrzeszcz. The easiest way to get there is to go through an entrance from Jaskowa Dolina Street. It is a place of numerous events, concerts and festivals that are organized here from May to September.
The Forest Theatre in the Gutenberg Groove in Gdansk Wrzeszcz was opened in 1911. A sheltered valley, by the road from the so-called Forest House to the Devil’s Bridge, was chosen to be its place. A three-level stage and an orchestra pit were built on a slope of the 80-meter-high Winter Hill - named so after the surname of a distinguished mayor. The valley and slopes of the opposite Hevelius Hill held an auditorium for two thousand people. Actors’ dressing rooms and toilets were constructed in a way that hid them in the green plants of the area. Electricity was also provided, and the whole territory was surrounded with a fence with ticket offices built in the entrance. The theatre in that form kept operating until World War II. The Forest Theatre was reactivated in the end of the 90s. Since 2001, “The Li ft” - An Integration Art Club has been acting as its host. It has been since that time that many artists played the theatre, including such music formations as Voo Voo, Pink Freud, and Kury, singers as Grzegorz Turnau or the “Limo” cabaret. Jazz concerts organized in the theatre have also become very popular. Owing to the city’s subsidies, all the events taking place in The Forest Theatre are free.
