Shakespeare Festival
Shakespeare Festival is an international periodic theatrical event, organised every year during the first week of August in Gdansk and the whole Tri-city. The festival’s history dates back to 1993 and the organisation of first Shakespeare Days in Gdansk, which were transformed into Shakespeare Festival in 1997, to become part of the Millennium of Gdansk celebrations.
Until 2008, there had been 12 editions of the event, featuring about 70 theatre groups from 30 countries. Since 2008, the festival has been organised by Gdansk Shakespeare Theatre and Theatrum Gedanense Foundation. The event aims at presenting and promoting the great English playwright’s works. Each year, the organisers set out to present the most interesting performances from Poland and abroad. Festival performances are presented in almost every available theatre venue in Tricity (Wybrzeze Theatre in Gdansk: Main stage and Malarnia stage, Kameralna stage in Sopot; Baltic Opera in Gdansk; Saint John’s Church in Gdansk; Musical Theatre in Gdynia), the events were also presented in non-theatrical venues (e.g. in Gdansk Shipyard) and in the open air. Theatre performances are accompanied by meetings with their makers: directors, actors, and dramatists, as well as an eventful educational programme called “The Summer Shakespeare Academy” (theatre and art workshops, lectures, exhibitions, seminars). Fostering the exchange of ideas, the festival naturally becomes a meeting space for artists and culture animators from across the world. The organizers’ goal is to make Shakespeare Festival one of the most important international theatre festivals in Europe.
