Arriving to Gdansk by car
If you plan to visit Gdansk by car, please remember about having you driving license and car’s registration documents with you. Foreign driving licenses are valid in Poland. Travelling on Polish roads is free, except just a few short ways. It is all because of lack of motorways, freeways and fast routes. The main routes are the A1 motorway connects Gdansk with Torun, Lodz and Katowice to the south and the S7 connects Gdansk with Warsaw and Krakow.
There are major plans of building them, some works are underway, but the earliest time for them to be finished is in 2012. The minimum age for driving in Poland is 18 years of age. Rear seat belts must be also fastened all the time. Children under 12 years old cannot sit in a front seat. The biggest and best known communication routes to Gdansk are:
- from Berlin via Szczecin, Koszalin and Slupsk,
- from the eastern border of Poland via Bialystok and Olsztyn
- from the Czech and Slovak border via Krakow and Warsaw
- from the Czech and German border via Wroclaw, Poznan and Bydgoszcz,
- from the Czech border via Katowice, Czestochowa, Lodz and Torun
