Gdansk was the scene of many important historical events. It is known not only as a city where World War II started but also as a birthplace of the Solidarity movement. The first independent union in a Warsaw Pact country to be recognised by the state, was founded in August–September 1980 at the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk. Only 1 year later, the union had 10 millions members. The world -famous Solidarity leader - Lech Walesa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 (and elected President of Poland only 7 years later). The movement is widely recognised as having played a huge role in the end of communist rule not only in Poland but also in other European countries.

We would like to show you most of the places in Gdansk which are related with Communism era and Solidarity movement. In 2005 European Solidarity Center was created here to tell the history of Solidarity in a friendly, modern way. Lot of archival documents, objects, photos and video projections are presented here. In the short distance from the European Solidarity Center you can also enter the symbolic BHP Hall which was the seat of the Inter-Enterprise Strike Committee. Other essential points of the agenda are: Monument to the Fallen Shipyard workers of 1970, St. Bridget’s Church and St. Mary’s Church, the Dariusz Kobzdej Rock Monument and the Anna Walentynowicz monument in Wrzeszcz district. Approx. 20 minutes of driving from the city centre, former Walesa Family Apartment is located.
